New deadline for the Online Consultation on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in Latin America and the Caribbean

“A strong commitment to gender equality and empowerment of women and girls must be a central element in the post-2015 development programme, but this time the focus should be on addressing the structural factors that underlie gender inequalities”.  Source: Global Thematic Consultation on inequalities. And the data shows that women in our region continue to face discrimination in access to education, the labor market and economic assets, and political participation. Violence against women continues to undermine all efforts to achieve development goals. The definition of the new agenda post 2015 is a unique opportunity to design new development models that place gender equality and empowerment of women in Latin America and the Caribbean at the center, with concrete action plans with targets and indicators. The Regional Interagency Group for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is contributing to this process through the development of a series of technical documents to support countries that are developing consultations on issues identified as priority on the agenda, and positioning of gender equality issues in the thematic consultations like the one recently held in Panama on violence and citizen security (January 2013).
